Southlakes Christian Education coordinates Special Religious Education (SRE) in public schools in and around the southern Lake Macquarie region.
At a time of widespread concern about our children, their future and the challenges they face, our education program
- gives students opportunity to investigate some of life’s big questions in a supportive environment
- motivates ethical behaviour
- explores how spiritual values contribute to quality relationships, and
- respects students’ ability to make up their own minds.
See below to discover more benefits of the program for students and the community.
We are an incorporated association and a registered charity. Donations of $2.00 and over are tax deductible.
Our education program is strongly supported by the Christian churches in our area, which nominate the delegates that make up our committee.
Benefits for students and community
Our SRE program- Provides opportunity for students to discuss important questions of worldview, purpose, values, faith and identity;
- Broadens students’ perspectives, enabling them to make informed choices as they develop their own commitments and worldview;
- Provides opportunity to explore the basic values, beliefs and ethical principles of Christianity and the Bible – a significant part of Australia’s cultural heritage;
- Encourages students to value one another and their relationships;
- Considers how spiritual values can support in times of crisis;
- Helps build resilience and a sense of self-worth;
- Reinforces the core values of NSW public schools: integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, participation, care, fairness.
Research shows that students familiar with Christian values tend to be less prone to at-risk and anti-social behaviours, and tend to have more positive attitudes to themselves and the community.
Familiarity with Christianity and the Bible also provides a valuable context to studies in literature, history, culture and the arts.
